Capacity building and technical support

1. Technical assistance and capacity building are essential to strengthening the capabilities of individuals and communities in developing or transition nations, leading to more operative policies and to better economic effects. Capacity building is collaborative and supports knowledge- and skill building.

2. Capacity building allows all to be engaged in a process of inquiry, critical thinking, relationship-building, reflection, and creative problem-solving.

3. Capacity building is “doing with,” not “doing for”.

4. TA is a direct application of expertise to solve an identified challenge.

5. TA is a precursor to capacity building.

6. Providing TA allows capacity building to take place.

Youth and digital technology

Digital skills are a key enabler for inclusion and the efficient use, adoption, and creation of digital technologies in Africa’s growing digital economy. Such technologies can transform the nature of both formal and informal work across various sectors. For example, they are beginning to disrupt aspects of the informal economy, increasing access to existing and new markets, promoting financial inclusion, and accelerating cross-border trading.

How much do African firms use digital technology, for what purposes, and how can they be encouraged to use it more? While advances have been made in digitalising Africa, with mobile payments a success story, firms still face challenges like higher costs of technology. Much more can be done to enable and empower them to reap its full potential, young people are more dominant in the digital economy and YECA engage youth to for such viable employment opportunities and advocating for internet penetration in rural places.

Employment and Green Job creation

Green Jobs have become an emblem of a more sustainable economy and society that preserves the environment for present and future generations and is more equitable and inclusive of all people and all countries. Green jobs reduce the environmental impact of enterprises and economic sectors, ultimately to levels that are sustainable. Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high-efficiency strategies; decarbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution. Green jobs in emerging economies and developing countries include opportunities for managers, scientists and technicians, but the bulk can benefit a broad cross-section of the population which needs them most: youth, women, farmers, rural populations and slum dwellers. YECA has the mandate to support in localization the action of youth in the environment and green job creation.

Entrepreneurship and SME’S

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have a key role in ensuring economic growth in a sustainable and inclusive manner. They are often the source of innovative ICT-enabled solutions that make a long-lasting impact in global, regional and national economies, and are an important source of new jobs especially for youth. SMEs make up more than 95% of all businesses worldwide, and represent a path out of poverty for many developing countries.
